Like it or lump it, facebook has become a major player for some media groups in terms of brand promotion and customer engagement.
It’s already a world leading provider of news feeds in its own right, half of adults in the US for example consuming news articles from it according to research by Pew.
And with the Independence referendum just around the corner, there may be some important lessons to be learned by news publishers from the States in terms of engagement with facebook around political events.
Golden rules I’d suggest for running a media facebook page include:
* Be engaging and have a conversation, don’t just broadcast out. Ask for help, say please and thank you, hold polls or celebrate great content.
* Don’t publish in a bubble. Facebook is part of ‘social’ media so use it as such. If someone publishes something great which isn’t yours, share or like it anyway.
* Update often. Treat it as a front door to the rest of your publishing platforms, not an annoying box to be ticked. And make sure people know it is there.
