High Praise for Still Growing Caledonian Mercury

THE beep of a text message landing in my iPhone at 11pm from Caledonian Mercury editor Stewart Kirkpatrick  revealed that they had been pipped at the post to the prize of Digital News Provider of the Year at the Newspaper Awards last night.

It was the impressive Belfast Telegraph what won it, with Cal Merc and The Guardian sharing second place in the competition.

But while naturally there may be some disappointment at not taking top spot, the Caledonian Mercury team should take solace in even being nominated for such a prize just three months after actually launching.

That in itself – far less being Highly Commended as they were – is a magnificent achievement at such an early stage.

It should offer huge encouragement to show faith in their fledgling title and grow it further, and perhaps even attract future investment so it can realise its undoubted potential.
