Resplendent in a kilt, he looked genuinely shocked having finished as runner-up last year and confiding to me a week or so ago that he didn't think the judges would hand it over to a freelancer in such a strong field.
He fairly ate his own words on stage at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London shortly before 11pm, saying: "It's great that you've given this to a freelance journalist, thank you very much."
Clearly my former Daily Record colleague, who has also popped up at The Scotsman, Daily Mail, Observer, Mail on Sunday and News of the World, not to mention BBC Panorama, Ecologist etc etc will now be unbearable.
But I'm chuffed to bits for him nevertheless. Not least because it means I've finally got an excuse to post this picture.
