Could Herald Group Take-Over The Scotsman?
Very interesting read over at bbc.co.uk where Scottish business and economy editor Douglas Fraser has been blogging about the demise of Johnston Press.
He, rightly, asked what the future holds for the staff at its flagship Scottish titles.
But aside from the more obvious thought that Malaysian investor Ananda Krishnan, who already has a 20% stake in the company, could ride to the rescue – Fraser floats the idea of the Herald group bidding for The Scotsman and SoS.
The synergies – ie job cuts, reduced newsprint, photo bills and so on – could be substantial, but at the expense of two quality newspaper titles which is something that the Scottish Government would take a keen interest in.
It also ties in with talk of a management buy-out or Trust that was floated in media circles earlier this year.
What makes the idea most interesting, of course, is the fact that Douglas Fraser until not so very long ago was the Scottish Political Editor of The Herald.
Does he know something we don't?
