The best football match report in ages

Christmas came early for the Jambo in me yesterday with the news that John Collins had ditched the dithering Hibees preferring instead to spend the festive season on the dole.

And who can blame him.

But, despite this champagne popping occasion, it was an altogether other sports story that grabbed my eye today, in The Herald, admittedly a rare buy in the Milne household.

It was this match report by Hugh MacDonald of last night’s thrilling 4-0 win for Aberdeen in the UEFA Cup.

Now, I couldn’t give a roughneck’s overalls if Aberdeen won or not.

But his use of language paints a picture with style, passion and imagery that truly sums up what was a superb occasion for the men from the North.

For any budding young sports writers out there, it is well worth a look.

Although, I’d just like to point out that it was two former Jambos on the pitch who helped steer the Dons to victory with another on the coaching staff helping to mastermind it!
