A BRITISH toddler has been shot dead in a gun battle at a Turkish cafe.
Alistair Grimason, two, was hit by a bullet as he slept outside in his
pram.
His desperate mother Ozlem fought in vain to revive him.
Last night she sobbed: “I blame myself for what happened. It is my
fault.”
The tragedy happened as Turkish-born Ozlem was having lunch with her
parents at a cafe in Foca, near Izmir.
The family was chatting away when four drunks started arguing.
Diners ducked for cover as one pulled out a gun and blasted away.
The men ran off, but Ozlem didn’t realise Alistair had been hit until
she went to check on him.
At first she thought he was asleep, then realised to her horror that he
had been fatally wounded.
Her husband David had just returned home to Scotland from the family’s
summer holiday.
Last night grieving David flew back to Turkey from their home in East
Kilbride, Lanarkshire.
He and Ozlem married four years ago after meeting while he was on
holiday in Turkey.
The couple’s wedding there featured on local TV.
Alistair’s uncle Mark said: “We believe the family were in a cafe
having a meal and there was open fire with guns.
“They didn’t discover that Alistair had been shot until they were
outside the building because he was sleeping in his pram.”
He added: “Ozlem took six weeks every summer to go and visit her
parents. David always went for two weeks of that six.
“He just came back at the weekend and this has happened since.”
Ironically, Ozlem said recently that she thought it was too dangerous
to raise her son in Scotland.
Police are still looking for the gunmen.
