Doc ‘Caused miscarriage’

The Mirror, 16/05/2002, p7

A WOMAN claims she miscarried after a Scots doctor gave her a dangerous
dose of drugs.
The General Medical Council was told yesterday that the woman, who was
not named, had gone to see Edinburgh doctor John Poncia for treatment
for her drugs dependency.
The GMC heard he gave her the opiate Rohypnol at twice the recommended
highest dose. A month later she miscarried.
Dr Poncia, 66, who now lives in London, faces allegations from 17
patients that he prescribed inappropriate medicine. The GMC heard
claims the doctor was known as “a soft touch” who would give patients
addictive substances.
Addiction expert Dr Jane Marshall said the pregnant woman should never
have been prescribed Rohypnol.
The hearing continues.
