SCOTLAND has been hit by a third case of deadly Legionnaires disease.
Medics said last night that the new patient, from Ayrshire, developed
symptoms of the disease while on holiday abroad.
But they refused the rule out the possibility that it was picked up in
Scotland.
Dr Maida Smellie, consultant in public health medicine at NHS Ayrshire
& Arran, said: “We have taken immediate steps to thoroughly investigate
the possible cause of the third case.”
Another Scot was confirmed as having the disease in the Glasgow area
just hours before the third case.
It was linked to an outbreak in Barrow-in-Furness which has claimed the
lives of three people.
Electrician Hugh Harkins, 56, from Clydebank, was employed at a
shipyard at the centre of the scare.
A spokesman for Greater Glasgow NHS Board said: “It is not a cause for
public concern because the infection is not transmitted from human to
human.”
