Bring it on

The Mirror, 24/05/2003, p1

BBC Scotland expect their biggest ever audience for tomorrow’s Old Firm
double header as the nation goes football crazy.
More than 1.5 million armchair footie fans will tune in as the Beeb
dedicates both its terrestrial networks to the closest league decider
of the decade. But it almost never happened.
The existing deal with the SPL guaranteed that they could show only 38
games across the season.
Broadcasting both games head to head took that number up to 39 –
sparking a frenzy of activity behind the scenes.
Senior executives stayed up late into the night thrashing out a new
deal which allowed them to relegate big-bucks SKY and Channel 5 to the
substitutes bench.
A BBC Scotland spokesman said: “This has been the closest run-in to the
league title since the 80s and we’re delighted to have secured both
games for our viewers.
“The whole thing really is unprecedented.
“We’ve never shown two games together.
“Normally we would have picked whichever game looked like having the
likely champions, but both sides are on the same points with just one
Rangers goal separating them.”
