A TERRIFIED woman was dragged up an alley by a gang of sex attackers
moments after she celebrated New Year.
The 28-year-old victim had been at Scotland’s biggest Hogmanay street
party, in Edinburgh, with her husband and friends when she became
separated from them in the 100,000 strong crowd.
As she was making her way to an agreed meeting place, she was grabbed
by four burly men who hauled her into a quiet lane before each took a
turn at sexually assaulting her.
They ran off when they realised that a crowd of revellers could see
Detectives hunting the men described the sickening attack as a horrific
ordeal for the woman and urged anyone who may have spoken to the men to
A spokesman said: “This was a terrifying assault on a young woman who
was on her way to meet her husband.
“It may be that someone witnessed the group of men either going into or
coming out of the lane, or that other women may have been approached or
intimidated by them.
“The incident casts a shadow on an otherwise trouble-free evening.”
The asault happened as the woman walked along Rose Street, just off
Princes Street. Her attackers were all in their late 20s or early 30s.
Police have taken the unusual step of issuing a description of the
victim, who hasn’t been named, to try to trace witnesses.
She has long, brown, wavy hair and was wearing a grey knee-length coat
with a fur collar.
The woman was not hurt seriously but was sobbing as she ran from the
alley to find her husband.
