COPS hunting a double murderer on the run after escaping from a prison
work placement a week ago have released a picture of him in a bid to
track him down.
George Gourlay, from Camelon, Falkirk, left Greenock Prison last
Thursday to go on an unescorted job with a local charity.
He travelled by bus but failed to return at 4.30pm. Gourlay was jailed
at the High Court in Stirling in 1981 for hacking divorcees Maureen
Maloney and Lorraine Fleming to death with a kitchen knife after a
night’s boozing.
It is the second time Gourlay has escaped.
He went missing from Saughton Prison, Edinburgh, in 1993 after a guard
took him for a pub lunch and let the killer walk out of the bar while
he went to the toilet.
Gourlay, 40, later handed himself in to a London police station.
A Prison Service source said Gourlay, an ex-soldier, was nearing the
end of his sentence and was treated as a Category D low-security
A spokesman said concern was growing for the safety and well-being of
the missing prisoner. She said: “His behaviour while in custody
suggests he is not a danger to the public.
“But he should not be approached.”
