MAUREEN Smith, 42 today, was raised Maureen Alice McLaughlin, by her
marine engineer father, Archie, and mum Mary, in Rutherglen, Glasgow.
She married Michael Smith, now 43, an electronics engineer, in
September 1987 but they divorced in April 1995, while she was still
involved with McConnell, friends say.
McConnell was general secretary of the Labour Party in Scotland and she
was his press officer.
Sources claim she and Jack ended when she demanded he choose between
her and his wife. It was no contest.
She picked herself up and worked for the Scottish Tourist Board before
taking on her current job with the Scottish Higher Education Funding
Council in Edinburgh.
She found love again too, marrying graphic designer Mark Owen in
Edinburgh Register Office in November 1999.
They lived in East Calder, Midlothian, and life looked rosy before
tragedy struck. On July 12, last year motorbike fan Mark died in a
horrific road crash.
Police said he pulled out to overtake a car on the B7026 Auchendinny to
Howgate Road in Midlothian and collided head-on with a Ford Fiesta.
