CELEBRITY chef Marco Pierre White was celebrating last night after
winning a £1.5million libel action against a former friend.
Tony Allan, 36, owner of the trendy FISH! chain of restaurants, agreed
to give White £100,000 in damages after an 11th hour settlement.
He and his company FISH! plc will also pay the legal costs of the
three-year battle, estimated at £1.5million.
Mirror columnist White, 39, was congratulated by friends, including
chef Gordon Ramsay, before leaving with wife Mati.
A spokesman said “He is understandably pleased.”
Allan had claimed in an interview with The Mirror that White replaced
squid ink with real ink in a braised cuttlefish dish.
He also claimed to have stopped supplying White with fish because he
had “tried pulling the wool over his eyes” in deals.
Yesterday Allan flew to Los Angeles as the settlement was unveiled
after four hours of talks.
Speaking about the ink claim, James Price QC, for White, told the High
Court in London: “Mr Allan accepts that this story is entirely untrue.
“Mr Allan now accepts that any suggestion that Mr White had been
dishonest is also completely untrue.”
Desmond Browne QC, defending Allan and FISH! plc, said he wished to
repeat his clients’ regret that the statements were ever published.
Allan had been in court for the morning before jetting off with wife
Denyse and daughters Charlee, 13, and Holly, eight, for the US premiere
of friend Guy Ritchie’s film Snatch.
He said in a statement: “This settlement will come as a great relief to
my family, friends, co-directors and shareholders.”
White was the youngest chef in the world, and the only British one, to
win three Michelin stars. He owns a number of top class London
