HeadLine: Last-ditch bid for Middle East peace

TENSION continued to grip the Middle East last night – despite Israel’s
pledge to accept a US-brokered plan for peace.
The Israeli Government agreed to the latest plan brokered by US CIA
Director George Tenet.
But Israeli soldiers angrily confronted a Palestinian who was trying to
get through a road-block on the main Qalandia to Ramallah route close
to the battle-scarred West Bank.
And Israeli Deputy Defence Minister Dalia Rabin-Pelossof said fighting
was likely to resume if Tenet ended his six-day-old mission without a
He warned: “We will be able expect a very significant increase in the
shootings and the fighting between the sides.”
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is also expected to approve what could
be the last chance for a truce today.
