DOLLY the cloned sheep is set to be slaughtered, scientists revealed
Researchers said they would be “heartbroken” by the death of the
world-famous animal in the battle to beat the foot and mouth crisis.
But a Roslin Institute official said: “There can be no exceptions, not
even for Dolly.” It had been hoped the sheep’s scientific importance
would lead to a lengthy reprieve in the hope the crisis would pass.
The research centre and farmland where she grazes, seven miles south of
Edinburgh centre, is in a state of quarantine. Two hundred staff still
working there are subject to a strict programme of disinfection.
But a source said that if infection does arrive, as they all fear,
Dolly’s head will be on a block.
An insider said: “Dolly may be unique but only in terms of scientific
“Hundreds of pigs and sheep graze on our farm and they are just as
vulnerable as any livestock.”
Dolly, who was successfully brought into the world in July 1996, has
been isolated with her third set of lambs since foot and mouth hit
Dr Harry Griffin at the Roslin Institute said: “In scientific terms she
has served her purpose.”
Dolly’s body has been promised to the National Museum of Scotland on
her death. But if she is culled as a result of foot and mouth it would
have to be incinerated, denying her scientific legacy to the world.
