THE death knell of yet another round of job losses has an all too
familiar ring in West Lothian.
Motorola may be the latest to walk away, but they are not the first to
hang up on Scots workers in recent years.
Giant BMC motor plant closed at Bathgate with the loss of 2000 jobs in
1984.
June 1999 – Seagate closes Livingston factory, wiping out 260 jobs.
August 1999 – Mitsubishi axes Livingston plant and 250 jobs; 600 laid
off when Levi Strauss closes factory; Continental’s tyre plant in
Newbridge shuts, 800 redundancies.
October 1999 – 300 Russell Athletics’ jobs axed in Livingston and
Bo’ness
March 2000 – ABP Ltd closes sheep abattoir in Bathgate, cutting 80
jobs; 99 jobs axed at Grampian Country Foods, Broxburn.
